Amritsar Travel Guide: A Soulful Journey of Spirituality, Food & Patriotism

Writer: Shweta BhosaleShweta Bhosale

If you’re planning a trip to Amritsar, get ready for a beautiful blend of spirituality, history, patriotism, and of course, mouth-watering food! My 2025 birthday was spent in this golden city, and I couldn’t have asked for a better way to celebrate. From the serene Golden Temple to the emotional experience at Jallianwala Bagh, and the electrifying Wagah-Attari Border ceremony, this trip was unforgettable. Let me take you through my journey and help you plan yours!

Day 1: The Golden Temple – A Spiritual Awakening

The Golden Temple, also known as Harmandir Sahib, is the heart of Amritsar. As I stepped inside, the sight of the shimmering gold structure reflected in the holy Sarovar (water tank) left me speechless. The peaceful atmosphere, the sound of Gurbani (Sikh hymns), and the kindness of the volunteers made me feel at home.

I started my day by taking a dip in the Sarovar, a ritual believed to cleanse the soul. Then, I sat in the temple’s huge Langar Hall, where volunteers serve free meals to thousands of people daily. Eating the simple yet delicious dal, roti, and kheer, prepared with so much love, was an experience in itself.

Since it was my birthday, I spent extra time soaking in the divine vibes, thanking the universe for another year of life. If you ever visit, make sure to sit by the Sarovar at night—the temple glows, and the reflection on the water is pure magic!

Day 2: A History Lesson at Jallianwala Bagh

Jallianwala Bagh is not just a garden; it’s a place that carries the pain of India’s past. As I walked through the narrow entrance, I could feel the weight of history. This is where, in 1919, thousands of innocent Indians were killed in a brutal massacre by British forces.

The bullet marks on the walls, the Martyrs’ Well, and the haunting silence sent chills down my spine. But what truly moved me was the Light and Sound Show in the evening. The storytelling, combined with dramatic visuals, brought history to life. I couldn’t hold back my tears as I imagined the horror of that day.

If you visit Jallianwala Bagh, I recommend watching the Light and Sound Show—it’s an emotional but important experience.

Day 3: The High-Energy Wagah-Attari Border Ceremony

From tears at Jallianwala Bagh to goosebumps at Wagah-Attari Border—what a contrast!

The Beating Retreat ceremony at the India-Pakistan border is nothing less than a festival. As I entered the stadium, I saw people waving flags, dancing to patriotic songs, and cheering loudly. The energy was contagious!

The soldiers from both sides perform an aggressive yet well-coordinated drill, ending with the lowering of the flags. The passion, the pride, and the electrifying atmosphere made me feel proud to be an Indian. If you plan to visit, reach at least an hour early to grab a good seat. And don’t forget to wear something patriotic—it adds to the fun!

Day 4: Amritsar’s Food Trail – A Feast for the Taste Buds

No trip to Amritsar is complete without indulging in its legendary food. Punjabi cuisine is all about rich flavors and generous portions, and I made sure to try everything!

  • Kulcha & Chole: My first stop was at a famous dhaba near Golden Temple. The Amritsari Kulcha, crispy on the outside and stuffed with spicy potatoes, paired with tangy chole (chickpea curry), was heavenly.

  • Lassi: To cool down, I had a tall glass of creamy, frothy lassi. It was so thick, the spoon stood upright!

  • Makki di Roti & Sarson da Saag: A winter delicacy, this dish was served with a dollop of white butter and jaggery on the side—pure comfort food!
