Part 1: Yamunotri and Gangotri – The Beginning of a Sacred Adventure: Char Dham Yatra Uttarakhand
Introduction Returning from Char Dham Yatra feels like stepping into life anew. This pilgrimage is a true test, and completing it leaves you with a feeling of peace and gratitude. In October 2024, I took on this sacred journey with my 64-year-old mother and younger sister, guided by Kartiki Tours. It’s not just a spiritual journey but also a physical challenge, requiring resilience and patience.
Getting There We started from Pune by train to Delhi, followed by a bus journey across Uttarakhand’s stunning landscapes. Kartiki Tours ensured smooth travel, with buses navigating mountain roads and picturesque valleys. Here’s a quick look at the highlights from the journey:
Haridwar: Known for its divine Ganga Aarti, we spent a serene evening by the Ganges, experiencing one of India’s most celebrated rituals.
Uttarkashi: This historic town is home to the Vishwanath Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, where we sought blessings before continuing on our way.
Guptkashi: A small, scenic town on the way to Kedarnath, this place holds stories of Lord Shiva and is considered sacred.
Mana Village: Near Badrinath, this quaint village is known as the last Indian village before the Tibetan border and has its unique cultural and historical significance.
Yamunotri – Reaching the Source of the Yamuna Yamunotri, the sacred source of the Yamuna River, requires a 6km trek from Jankichatti. This trek is a bit of a climb and requires stamina.
For elderly travelers, there are options like “kachchars” (horses), “pitthu” (a person carrying travelers on their back), and “doli” (a four-person carrier), with costs ranging from ₹10,000 to ₹15,000 depending on the season. While trekking can be tiring, October’s cool weather made it manageable. Trekking this path brought a feeling of accomplishment and connection to nature.
Gangotri – The Peace of the Ganga’s Origin Gangotri is a less strenuous stop, with only a short 10-minute walk from the parking area. Wheelchairs are also available for around ₹200-₹250 for those who need them.
The river’s presence here brings a deep calm, making Gangotri a must-visit site. Here, we felt at peace amidst the mountain peaks and flowing waters of the sacred Ganga.

Kartiki Tours – Beyond the Basics Kartiki Tours was exceptional in managing our meals and ensuring our comfort. Their team prepared hot, timely meals at challenging locations like Kedarnath, where food was ready at 4 AM. They even had hot soup waiting for us after our long journey to Badrinath at 10 PM! Kartiki Tours went beyond the four main pilgrimage sites to show us other temples and important places on the way, adding depth and meaning to the journey.
Lakhamandal Temple is famous for being home to what many believe is the world’s first Shivlinga. This ancient site is steeped in spiritual history and is known for its strong connection to the Mahabharata. According to legend, the Pandavas took refuge here during their Agyatvaas (the period when they lived in hiding), and it’s said that Lord Shiva’s blessings protected them.
The temple has fascinating features, including stone Dwarpals (guardians) at the entrance, who seem to watch over visitors. Another wonder is the mirror-like Shivlinga, which reflects an image of those standing before it—a sight many find mystical. Lakhamandal Temple is a must-visit for anyone seeking spiritual insight or an encounter with India’s ancient legends.
Our Char Dham Yatra in Uttarakhand was an unforgettable journey filled with beautiful sights and spiritual places. Starting with the Ganga Aarti in Haridwar, we traveled to Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath. Each temple had its own charm—Yamunotri required a challenging trek, while Gangotri was easy to reach and offered wheelchairs for older visitors. Along the way, we saw Lakhamandal Temple, a hidden gem, and passed through scenic apple orchards, adding to the natural beauty. Kartiki Tours made the trip easy with their well-planned bus rides, simple yet cozy accommodations, and freshly prepared vegetarian meals. This journey was not only a visit to famous temples but also a chance to connect with nature and experience Uttarakhand’s unique culture.
